I think it is finally official that the rainy season is over. We haven't had rain since last week. And it kind of looks like fall because all of the trees are dropping their leaves. It's kind of sad. Rainy season is characterized by pounding rainstorms, still air, humid air, cloudy skies, beautiful birds, green grass and green trees. The dry season is characterized by beating sunshine, cloudless skies, soaring temperatures, lowered humidity, breezy air, brown grass, leafless trees, few birds (other than vultures of course) and burning. They burn in the dry season. That means, in a few months all we will smell is smoke and black ash will be falling like gentle snowflakes. Last dry season our neighborhood almost burned down because a fire got out of control. They even had photos of in on the AP. But even though we live in the land of eternal summer, the Panamanians now say that the winter (rainy season) is over and that summer has truly begun. There is a feeling of exuberance that is different. People can be seen wearing shorts a little more often during the summer than during the rest of the year. But now, they can go to the beach whenever they want without the threat of rain. Such a pleasure, except that now it's jellyfish season, so if you brave the waters, you probably will get stung. It's a trade off. I personally would rather have the rain.
