Day 3 Corregidor

Here is my group and I on a large gun. Corregidor was the last stand for the US in the Philippines. The US built a huge base on the island and had it protected with guns all around it. Most of it was built before airplanes so during WWII it was not as successful as it could have been if it would have been designed a few years later since it could be seen from the air.


These guns actually were on a sort of hydraulic lift and they would rise up out of the ground to fire and then lower back down to be better hidden from ground and sea troops. These were called batteries and they were in groups of two to three guns around the island.
This is Malinta tunnel. This was a dug out cave and was the head quarters for many years for both US then Japanese after they took over the island. One of the wings was the hospital and it had 1,000 beds for sick and wounded. The Navy also had part of the tunnel and had a tunnel leading right out to sea so they could load and unload ships without being in the open. The Japanese bombed this hill/tunnel for several days, sending 3 bombs a min. Once all the big guns around the island were taken out the Japanese brought tanks onto the island. The US then surrendered because they were not equipped to hold them off.
